Family support units improve access to justice for children ©

Justice for All

March 2020

The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme supported the Nigeria Police Force to establish family support units (FSUs) in the Apo and Kubwa police stations in Abuja. The two FSUs were formally handed over to the Divisional Police Officers of each station, which was witnessed by traditional and religious leaders, members of the Police Community Relations Committee, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Apo and Kubwa police stations were selected due the high number of cases in both areas and the availability of space within the police stations for an FSU.

FSUs aim to improve the handling of children in contact with the law. They are specialised units within the Police Force set up to manage child offenders and cases of child abuse in line with the Child Rights Act (2003) Law, section 207 (i.e. children in conflict with the law and also children in contact with the law).

RoLAC’s support for the establishment of FSUs aims to enhance access to justice for children and vulnerable youths.
